The Melbourne City-Southbank Lions Club recently donated eighteen teddy bears to safe steps Family Violence Response Centre, to comfort children escaping family violence.

Family violence in Melbourne continues to rise with family incidents recorded by police increasing by 15% in 2015-16. safe steps have felt the brunt of this with Annette Gillespie, CEO of safe steps confirming that in the 2016-2017 financial year, 91,057 calls were made to the safe steps response phone line – a 46 per cent increase on the 15-16 financial year.

Over the 16-17 financial year, safe steps provided over 29,000 bed nights in emergency accommodation for thousands of women and children who had been forced to flee their homes.

As the state-wide 24/7 first response to women and children experiencing family violence, safe steps has a proud 40 year history of offering immediate response that informs, protects and connects women and their children so they are safe and their voices are heard.

Women experiencing family violence can call safe steps’ 24/7 free call family violence response phone line on 1800 015 188 and speak confidentially to another woman for information on family violence support services, legal rights and accommodation options.

The Melbourne City-Southbank Lions Club has a strong commitment to local community and is proud to be part of the larger Lions community who have distributed in excess of 2500 bears to very needy recipients over the past 12 months.
