HUGGING a loveable little stuffed animal can brighten a child’s day.

The Mooroolbark Lions Club has been donating “comfort bears” to the SES, CFA and police for more than 30 years.

The club’s director Peter Giddings said the bears could be quite useful in helping to comfort a child facing a traumatic situation.

Recently, the club handed 18 bears over to thankful Mooroolbark police.

Senior Sergeant Jeff Haines said the bears generally proved useful when handed out to children in mild distress.

“It helps break down potential or existing barriers and shows the children that police are also human,” Mr Haines said.

“The general feel is that they work to some degree, but clearly are not intended for severe or long-term trauma cases where ongoing professional care is essential.”

The club delivered the latest bundle to the delighted Mooroolbark police officers last week. The club’s director Peter Giddings said the bears could be quite useful in helping to comfort a child facing a traumatic situation.
