Story from the Knox Leader Dec 02 2014

WANTIRNA Lions Club has donated 36 trauma teddies to Knox Police to hand out to young children they encounter on the job.

Knox Police Senior Sergeant Phil Edmunds said the teddies would be used for a range of situations, from children who had just faced road trauma to those in family-violence situations.

“Once we get the teddies, we will hand them over to children that need something to hold onto or cuddle because they’ve experienced a traumatic or critical incident,” Sen-Sgt Edmunds said.

“Sometimes it makes them feel safer while police officers do what they have to do with the people around them.

“Police are now first responders – we attend all incidents in the first incidents. We’re there when there’s still a lot of heat in the matter. If children see their parents injured in some way, it’s something where our members can help that child.”

Wantirna Lions Club project co-ordinator Natalie O’Hehir said the club would hand out 180 teddies to police, the CFA, Ambulance Victoria, and other emergency service providers.

“It’s only a little thing, but it means a lot,” Ms O’Hehir said.
